Dental Imaging

During your visit to West University Family Dentistry, you can expect your oral exam to be accompanied by x-rays or other dental imaging techniques. Dentists use imaging to find cavities, hidden dental structures, bone loss or malignant or benign masses.

CEPH X-ray

A Cephalometric X-ray, or Ceph X-ray, is a diagnostic radiograph used primarily for orthodontic treatment planning. Ceph X-Rays are extraoral, so patients do not have to insert any sort of trays, bitewings or films into the mouth. They are also safe, fast, painless and extremely effective.

Digital X-rays

Among the most commonly used dental imaging techniques, digital x-rays do not expose you to as much radiation as film x-rays (up to 90% less). The imaging results help your dentist identify any abnormalities in the gums, teeth and enamel. Unlike film x-rays, digital x-rays yield high quality images almost instantaneously, resulting in shorter dental visits!

Intraoral Camera

An intraoral camera is a small video camera that takes an image of the outside of the gum or tooth. The intraoral camera resembles an oversized pen. While simultaneously viewing a monitor, the dentist inserts the camera into a patient's mouth and gently shifts it about so that images can be taken from a variety of angles.

iTero Dental Impressions

The iTero Intraoral Scanner allows doctors to take a 3D digital scan of a patient’s teeth and bite rather than using a viscous impression material. This digital impression scanner can be used for veneers, crowns, bridges, surface inlays, onlays, implant abutments from single units to full arches and even modeling an Invisalign treatment. Patients are also able to view before and simulated after images of their dental treatments on an in-office computer display.

KaVo DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Finder

The KaVo DIAGNOdent laser is a revolutionary, ADA approved method for detecting cavities using sound. Using a low-density laser, hidden decay is found much the same way a metal detector locates metal objects in the ground. When the laser pinpoints a cavity, it produces a sound. Thanks to this new technology, your dentist at West University Family Dentistry can discover unseen decay long before other conventional methods and provide treatment before larger oral problems develop. The procedure is quick and pain-free.
